Dignity in Every Stitch: I Am Someone Australia Visits the Guardians of Household Health

Joanne and Kristen from I Am Someone Australia visited the mothers of our Guardians of Household Health project, leading a menstrual hygiene talk and donating dozens of reusable sanitary pads for women in need.

Last month, Adorn Life Initiative had the honour of hosting two special visitors, Joanne and her friend Kristen from I Am Someone, Australia. The two travelled to meet the remarkable women of our Guardians of Household Health women’s empowerment project, a group of mothers working together to build healthier homes through knowledge, skills, and financial independence.

At the heart of their visit was a menstrual hygiene health talk. Menstrual health remains a subject too often surrounded by silence, yet it touches the dignity, confidence, and well-being of every woman and girl in our community. Joanne and Kristen spoke openly with the mothers, creating a safe space where questions could be asked freely and experiences shared without shame.

The conversation went beyond awareness. Joanne and Kristen introduced the mothers to reusable sanitary pads -a safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative to disposable products that many families in our community struggle to afford. They demonstrated how to use and care for the pads, and went a step further by teaching the mothers how to make them locally, using materials within reach. This hands-on training means the knowledge will not leave when the visit ends: it stays in the hands of the mothers, who can make pads for themselves, their daughters, and their neighbours — and even turn the skill into another source of income for their group.

Before departing, Joanne and Kristen generously donated dozens of reusable sanitary pads to Adorn Life Initiative. In the coming weeks, we shall be distributing these pads to women and girls in need across our community, ensuring that no woman has to compromise her health, schooling, or work simply because of her period.

This visit speaks to everything the Guardians of Household Health project stands for: mothers equipped with knowledge and skills, supported to care for the health of their households in sustainable ways.

To Joanne, Kristen, and the entire I Am Someone family in Australia, thank you. Your warmth, openness, and generosity have left a lasting mark on the women of Kasese. You reminded every mother in that room that she is not forgotten. She is someone.

    Live Healthy, Live Life Better.

Bringing Hope to the Hills: Adorn Life Initiative Supports Landslide Victims in Kyondo and Kyarumba

On May 12th, 2024, tragedy struck the foothills of Mount Rwenzori when a devastating landslide swept through the villages of Kyondo Subcounty and Kyarumba in Kasese District. Thirteen lives were lost in the disaster, and countless others were left in despair—displaced from their homes, their crops destroyed, and their livelihoods shattered.

In the aftermath, many survivors sought refuge in makeshift camps, the largest of which was established at Kanyatsi Catholic Church. It was here that stories of loss and resilience echoed under the Rwenzori sky.

Moved by the plight of the victims, Adorn Life Initiative, with generous support from students of Kampala International University and well-wishers from Lira, organized a relief outreach to stand with the affected families during their time of need. Volunteers gathered and delivered much-needed supplies, including foodstuffs, clothing, footwear, and various household items.

These items were distributed at Kanyatsi Catholic Church, where hundreds of people had gathered in hope of help. What arrived was more than material support—it was a sign that they were not alone, that even in the face of disaster, compassion could still reach them.

Adorn Life Initiative extends heartfelt gratitude to every individual and group that contributed to this cause. Your generosity made a difference, reminding the people of Kyondo and Kyarumba that their lives and futures still matter.

Adorn Life Initiative Conducts a Medical Outreach in Kanyatsi Parish

On the 23rd of February 2025, a dedicated team of young and passionate doctors from Adorn Life Initiative held a significant medical outreach at Kanyatsi Catholic Church in Kasese District. The event aimed to provide essential healthcare services, educate the community on pressing health matters, and foster better health practices among the residents of Kanyatsi Parish.

The day was marked by a series of impactful activities that addressed critical health concerns affecting the community. These included:

    1. Health Education and Awareness

The outreach began with an extensive health education session, where the doctors engaged with the general public on various health issues. Topics covered included:

    • Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy: The role of parents and the community in safeguarding young girls from early pregnancies was emphasized. The team provided guidance on effective parental communication, mentorship, and community-based interventions to curb this challenge.
    • Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases: The doctors educated the community on ways to prevent common non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and hepatitis. They highlighted the importance of proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and routine health check-ups to mitigate the risks associated with these conditions.
    • Counseling and Guidance: Attendees had the opportunity to receive professional counseling on various health conditions, including mental health issues, reproductive health, and general wellness. The doctors addressed personal health concerns, offering advice tailored to individual needs.

    2. Free Medical Consultations

A key highlight of the event was the provision of free medical consultations. Community members with various health conditions had the chance to interact with qualified doctors, discuss their symptoms, and receive medical advice and recommendations. Many residents who had been struggling with undiagnosed or untreated health issues were able to get professional insights and referrals for further medical management where necessary.

    3. Screening and Testing for Common Illnesses

To ensure early detection and management of prevalent diseases, the team conducted free screening and testing for a range of health conditions, including:

    • Diabetes – Blood sugar levels were checked to identify individuals at risk of or already living with diabetes.
    • Hypertension – Blood pressure screenings helped detect cases of high blood pressure among the attendees.
    • HIV/AIDS – Voluntary HIV testing and counseling services were offered to encourage awareness and early treatment.
    • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – Individuals with symptoms of UTIs were screened and provided with necessary medical advice.
    • Malaria – Given the high prevalence of malaria in the region, on-site malaria tests were conducted, and those diagnosed were guided on appropriate treatment options.

    Impact and Community Response

The outreach program was met with overwhelming gratitude from the residents of Kanyatsi Parish. Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity to receive free medical services, especially in a region where access to healthcare remains a challenge. The initiative not only addressed immediate health concerns but also empowered the community with knowledge and resources to lead healthier lives.

Adorn Life Initiative remains committed to promoting public health and looks forward to organizing more such medical outreach programs in the future. Through continued engagement and collaboration with local communities, the initiative aims to bridge healthcare gaps and contribute to the overall well-being of the people in Kasese District and beyond.

Adorn Life Initiative Reaches Remote Schools in Kyondo Sub-County with Health Education

On February 24th, 2025, the second day of its community outreach in Kasese District, Adorn Life Initiative shifted its focus to the youth by conducting a school-based health education program in Kyondo Subcounty. The outreach targeted some of the most remote schools in the region, aiming to equip students with critical knowledge on reproductive health and overall well-being.

The team visited Kyondo Primary School, located near the border of Mt. Rwenzori National Park, and Bughungu Primary School, nestled deep in the valley of the Nyamugasana River. These schools, surrounded by the breathtaking yet isolating terrain of the Rwenzori Mountains, often face challenges in accessing health education and services.

    Empowering the Next Generation

At both schools, the medical team interacted with groups of teenagers aged 11 to 17. The sessions were carefully tailored to the needs and concerns of this age group, focusing on two main areas:

    1. Reproductive Health Education

The doctors led engaging and age-appropriate discussions on the prevention of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). With open and respectful dialogue, they emphasized the importance of informed decision-making, understanding bodily changes, and the long-term impact of early pregnancies and untreated STDs. The team encouraged students to value education and personal development, while also highlighting the role of self-respect, peer influence, and community support in making healthy life choices.

    2. Guidance and Counseling

In addition to reproductive health, the outreach included guidance and counseling sessions covering a broad range of health topics affecting young people. These included mental health, hygiene, nutrition, peer pressure, and coping with family or academic stress. The medical professionals created a supportive environment where students felt safe to ask questions and seek help for personal concerns, some of which they had never had the opportunity to express before.

    Positive Reception and Future Prospects

The school visits were met with enthusiastic participation from students and heartfelt appreciation from school staff. Many teachers remarked that such interactive sessions were both timely and necessary, as they addressed gaps in the current school health programs.

The success of this school outreach reaffirmed Adorn Life Initiative’s commitment to reaching underserved populations, especially the youth in rural communities. The organization plans to continue partnering with schools in hard-to-reach areas, empowering students with the knowledge and confidence they need to make informed decisions and lead healthier lives.

As part of its broader mission, Adorn Life Initiative believes that investing in the health education of young people is a critical step toward building resilient and thriving communities in Uganda and beyond.
